Personal Statement

My life's purpose is to declare war on repression. It is an unbeatable foe and a lifelong obsession. In waging this fantastical and futile war, my only hope is to raise awareness of repression as the root of all evil. It is my belief that through fully understanding our own repression, we can achieve both inner peace and peace in the world.

To cast away this invisible enemy, my aim is to create objects for the masses. Just like how Martin Luther fueled his reformation through the spread of woodblock printed leaflets, I will fuel mine through a sculptural form of printmaking. My practice involves both traditional printmaking and sculpture, often blending the two. Plaster is the material that keeps reappearing in my work. It is fragile, ethereal, and temporary. It acts like a thin wall separating us from the real world, an illusion that convinces us we have mastered our social and physical bodies, just like repression with its sweet whispers and lies.

Unlike printing on paper, plaster is an untamable beast. Its temperament rivals the passion in my soul. A worthy friend that follows me into battle. These plaster sculptures are cast from vacuum formed plastic sheets, which I engrave with drypoint and carborundum. I ink them, then pour the plaster into the matrix. The marks come from my unconscious, these mythical creatures, weapons, and martyrs, Together, they build the visual foundation for my war.

My main source of inspiration comes from Terror Management Theory, or TMT. Through further research, I realized that my art practice and this theory have been unconsciously aligned from the start. TMT positions repression as both protection and prison. The plaster armor and weapons I make are my way of expressing that delicate balance we need to maintain in order to keep a healthy mind. My aim with these objects is to create a shared language, something close to a religion. The more people see and understand the work, the stronger and more united we become as a species.

My aim is to spread a message of acceptance and love. We must understand ourselves and each other, or we will crash and burn.
